Oprah Winfrey the well known US talkshow host will be attending the graduation of the girls school she set up which has made headlines over sexual abuse. In spite of all the negative press, Oprah is very excited to have started the school which she spent $40 million (£26 million) on which is a home for disadvantaged girls, the first year to graduate, all passed with 100%. The school in Henley on-Klip, south of Johannesburg is excited to give the kids opportunities to go to South African Universities and US Universities, a higher education which these children would not normally have had.

The school made headlines over sexual abuse, after it was alleged that it was being covered up by the teachers and a dead baby was found in the school which a 17 year old student gave birth to. Winfrey openly discussed the difficulties she faced setting up the school saying: “I know what it’s like to be a poor girl with your heart’s desire to do well in the world,” she added. “I chose to use my philanthropy to do what I know.” Winfrey shared her delight in witnessing the first graduation of her school, posting on Facebook: “The girls are nervous and excited. I am one proud Mama.”

The well loved Chuckle Brothers can be seen in a hilarious commercial campaign for VanCompare.com created by the leading advertising agency London Creative. The comedy duo best known for their BBC children’s show ‘Chuckle Vision’ are up to their usual visual gags and well known catch phrases : “To me to you” and “Oh dear oh dear.” It is fun to see them again up to their well known harmless tricks and it is rumoured that they will back again to do another series of ads similar to the VanCompare.com commercials but for bikes and cars, BikeCompare.com and CarCompare.com. The duo who have just been released by the BBC after being signed for 25 years are also coming out in a movie this Christmas. It appears that the Chuckle Brothers are going even more mainstream. It is great to have them around and soon to be on our big screen too. A chuckle a day keeps the doctor away.

Modern Family is one the best comedy series around filled with talented actors delivering a terrific and witty script making a great Christmas box set present. The series centers equally around three story lines: 1.Claire the neurotic mother of three, all of whom are wonderfully different and believable kids and her ‘hopeless’ but lovely husband Phil. 2. Claire’s brother, Mitchell and his partner Cameron with their newly adopted baby and 3. Mitchell and Claire’s father Jay with his new young sassy Columbian wife, Gloria and her young son Manny. Each of the characters is quirky and yet believable as are their story lines. The writers somehow equally divide up the comedy lines that are delivered by the actors with flair and practiced ease. The story lines are also equally shared refreshingly giving each of the three a crack on each episode. This makes a welcome change to the series commonly watched where we follow one character throughout the episode. With Modern Family we get to know and enjoy all of the characters and watch them on their journeys every episode. Yes, the ending can be a little cheesy but the one liners make up for any imperfections, besides I don’t know a family that is perfect.

UK analogue TV will end on October 24th 2012 says Digital UK. People who do not subscribe to satellite of cable services will have to buy a new digital TV or set-top boxes to continue to watch television. The end of analogue TV will also be the end of teletext services such as BBC Ceefax which frees up the connection for high- speed wireless and smartphone networks. However, digital TV offers a wider range of choice and programmes than analogue. TV broadcasting began in 1932 and the BBC began broadcasting on TV in 1936. It is an exciting change for TV which started going digital in 2007 and the full transition has taken four years. Most people have already made the shift to digital TV but the government has put aside money to help those who are less able to update their TV’s. Theresa Wise, an independent media analyst said: “The vast majority of people have already switched over to digital because they like the additional choice and there seems to be quite good… and early communications around what’s available for people on lower incomes, or elderly or disabled people.” This is a very fast transition, in only 80 years since the beginning of TV, it has developed extremely fast as technology has improved and changed. The world of communication is changing fast. The world going digital.

It is important to think about where you place your LCD TV in your home to optimise the TV’s life length and functionality. Most TV’s operate within a range of -10° to +50°. It is unlikely in the UK that your home will reach these extremes but placing a TV on the wall above a radiator is not a good idea. This placement will greatly reduce the efficiency of the TV’s cooling system with the hot updraft pushing dust and dirt towards the TV and thereby clogging the ventilation slots. The excess heat is not good news for the TV, as is the case with many electrical items and could lead to premature failings. This could manifest itself in faulty pixel screen images and colour distortion. So, if you’ve just bought a new LCD TV take a minute to think about its placement in your home so that you don’t have to rush out and buy another too soon which is better for the environment and your pocket.

The campaign called ‘Go Forth’ is said to emphasis the brand’s “youthful optimism and energy” and was filmed in Berlin on May Day during organised political demonstrations. The global campaign which was due to go out in August on Facebook, TV and cinema has had to be postponed and currently only a selection of photographs have been released on Facebook. Rebecca Van Dyck, global chief marketing officer of Levi’s told AdAge in the US: “We’re in touch with all corners of the world and want to be sensitive about what’s going on in the U.K. and, specifically, London.

“While ’Go Forth’ is about embodying the energy and events of our time, it is not about any specific movement or political theme; rather, it’s about pioneering spirit.”

According to figures from Best Buy the average television size has grown by 3” in the last year. In the government-commissioned Foresight report concluded that if nothing was done about the growing obesity problem in this country 60% of men, 50% of women and 25% of children will be obese by 2050. Currently according to the latest Health Survey for England (HSE) nearly 1 in 4 adults are currently obese while 1 in 10 children between the ages of 2-10 are now obese. With TV’s turning into multi- functioning devices people are re-evaluating the size of their TVs and choosing larger boxes. It is clear with the advancement of technology and the consumer- lead world we live in, there is a desire to get the ‘biggest’ the ‘best’ and the ‘latest’ device. But it must not be forgotten that the gadgets should improve our standard of living and with that comes health and not be our downfall.

Chief executive, Adam Crozier, confirmed the rumour in the company’s proposal for 2011, published this week. Crozier announced: “We plan to have a pay mechanism in place around the turn of the year so that we can test what viewers are willing to pay for, and we continue to work with our partners on YouView, which is on track for launch early next year.” ITV Player has recently become available on Apple devices, Android and Freesat. It is not clear how the paid system will work exactly and whether or not all programmes will be paid. However, judging from the responses already people are not happy about the news and it will be interesting to see how this will effect ITV’s new proposal.

Over the past 50 years Amnesty international (AI) has gained a reputation for aggressively defending human rights for the billions of oppressed and wrongfully imprisoned and tortured people of the world.
Celebrating their 50th birthday this year AI is the oldest and most famous internation human rights organisations in the world, and to celebrate half a century of fighting for justice they have launched an online TV channel.
The channel will be a video magazine, available on YouTube and their website, that “mixes satirical comedy, campaign stunts, short documentaries, outspoken opinion and real news.”
So far just one episode has been uploaded to their channel and is well worth watching if only just to see the reaction of the Iranian government when they are thanked by an AI TV presenter for “keeping them (Amnesty International) in business for the last 50 years”.
If you don’t have a spare 15 minutes for episode one then watch the 50 second trailer to get a feel for the show.
